STOCKLAND HILL

The old cylinder examined

On these pages we will give you some idea of the work involved in updating a high power main station in the run-up to digital switchover. We are indebted to Laura, Ian, Colin and the team working at Stockland Hill for their help and co-operation.

Looking straight up the cylinder; the bright patch is light coming through the translucent access hatch at the very top.

A few days later, now partly dismantled... Those kind people at Babcocks had removed some of the GRP sheets so that Mike and I could have a better look.

Just in front of the cylinder is a single full length EMI slot, about 2 m long. On each of the three faces of the array there were three full length and one half length units.

Unlike Hannington (for example) the cylinder here would have offered only the most cramped of working conditions.

Looking "down" through the hatch at the very top.

Again, looking down through the cylinder.
