Comments: White City is a relay of Crystal Palace

Show historic services

January 2014

BBC White City is a few minutes walk north up Wood Lane from the more familiar BBC TV Centre. The White City stadium used to occupy the site, but was demolished in 1985. As the new BBC buildings would cause screening of Crystal Palace to those properties to the north and west of the site, a self help relay was installed around 1990. In analogue days it transmitted all five services and was converted to digital at the time of DSO at Crystal palace in April 2012. It works as a conventional transposer, even though many of the programmes originate from the building below. This is probably the only TV transmitter still owned by the BBC.

The first picture shows the front, south face of the first building completed, usually referred to as BBC White City. The aerials for the relay were installed on the north-east corner, round the back.

To the left are the more recent Media Centre, nearest, and Broadcast Centre, furthest.

The Broadcast Centre. Red Bee Media are based here and are responsible for the playout of all BBC TV channels and for some other clients.

The BBC vacated the White City building in 2013, and it is now up for sale. Consequently, they have moved the relay to the roof of the Broadcast Centre. This is the view across the A40 Westway.

I understand this satellite dish is owned by Red Bee Media, and is used for some of their other, non-BBC clients.
