This temporary MW station was set up near Kenilworth in spring 2014. A grounded 52m lattice tower supports a "fat" cage vertical radiator fed against a ground mat laid upon the surface of the field. This was constructed to provide coverage of Radio 5-Live as well as the two MW commercial services to the Midlands during mast maintenance at Droitwich. It is expected to be in service during daylight hours for about six months. The tx power on each programme is reported as being 8 kW, with an ermp of 10 kW. |

A closer view showing the cage wires running from the top of the mast out to strainer guys and then down to a feed ring at the base. |
Here's a version of the photo above with the radiating wires highlighted. We're not entirely certain whether the "straining guys" (shown in a delicate shade of mauve here) are in fact live or not. There's no sign of any insulators on them or between them and the fat cage, however they could of course be made of some synthetic non-conducting rope material. Update 16th April 2014 - Dave dropped in for another inspection and tells us that the guys are made of a material similar to polypropylene so we can safely assume that they don't contribute to the radiation. There are no insulators at the points where they join the main cage. |
Close-up of the feed arrangement. The radial wires laid on the surface of the ground can be seen clearly. |
The equipment cabins and Aggreko generators near the access road. Two large satellite dishes sit between the cabins and the generators, presumably to provide programme feed and monitoring. |
