(This "lost" site has been added to fill a gap which was identified when the entries for Langley Mill were updated.) Rainford was one of the MF sites developed by the IBA for the early Independent Local Radio stations. The Liverpool/Merseyside station launched on 1546 kHz as "194 Radio City" on 21 October 1974. The VHF service, from Allerton Park, entered service on 8 February 1975. The same frequencies were allocated to a number of stations - the general solution was to place a phased array of three or four masts just outside the area to be covered. Other examples also operating on 1546 kHz - include Skew Hill (Sheffield) and Saffron Green (London). At Rainford the maximum ERP was directed approximately south west, at Skew Hill and Saffron Green maximum ERP is towards the south east. The general arrangement at Rainford was probably similar to Skew Hill which also uses three masts. It seems coverage from Rainford was not entirely satisfactory and eventually a new site at Bebington was brought into use - still on 1548 kHz but with a single mast and omnidirectional pattern. We have no photos of Rainford and there seems to be little or no trace of the installation now visible. |
From www.old-maps.co.uk - the three masts are at the edge of "Depot (disused)" - this is understood to have been a WW2 ammunition store. The buildings ("units") around the depot are now used for mixed light industrial purposes. A planning application from 2003 for "Installation of cabinets at Radio City mast" is recorded against one of the units - there is a communications tower next to one of the buildings. This may have been the location of broadcast transmitter. |
