Long term RSL for Loughborough

Carillon Radio is licensed to transmit 1 watt effective radiated power to the Loughborough Hospital using Medium Wave. As it is freely radiating it can be received with a good signal in Loughborough and further with a good receiver.
I decided to take a stroll through the Loughborough University campus to the hospital to find the antenna mast.

Hopefully the hospital is better kept than their signage!

I went round the hospital to their car park and approached the mast.

Oh dear! We seem to have lost some of the spokes from the 'top hat', which serve to increase the electrical length of the aerial. According to an old Google map there used to be 6 spokes.

At the base of the aerial there is a purpose made shed which houses the transmitter.

The aerial is fed by co-axial cable coming from the rear of the shed. Matching must be within the mast which I believe is a converted flag pole.

Carillon Radio is owned by the same company (Carillon Broadcasting Ltd) as Hermitage FM in nearby Coalville. They have a coffee shop in Memorial Square and have 5 out of 5 on tripadvisor. Carillon also has an outlet at Coalville Community Hospital on 1431kHz. In a recent licensing round for 'Region 11,' Ofcom awarded a medium Wave licence to Carillon Wellbeing Radio (May 2017) to cover west Leicestershire and this may well take over from the 2 current low power outlets.

Carillon Radio may well have got its name from the Carillon Tower and War Memorial museum in Queen's Park in Loughborough. It was built in 1922 in memory of the town's war dead. It stands 46 metres high. In the bell chamber is a Carillon, a rack of 47 bells which are played by a clavier (keyboard) underneath.
