Kennet Radio

Kennet Radio is the local community radio station for Newbury and Thatcham and immediate area in West Berkshire. Kennet Radio commenced broadcasting online in 2012. In March 2018 a Band II licence was granted for 106.7MHz from a location in North East Newbury.

The location of the Kennet Radio transmitter is in Turnpike Road in North East Newbury on the Grass Valley site. The antenna is on the left hand side of the building in this picture. Interestingly, this building has historic broadcasting significance as it was home to Quantel that developed digital television production systems, including some of the first all-digital frame store systems in the 1970's.

Ed's note: Quantel merged with Snell, to form SAM in 2015, then in 2018 Grass Valley's parent company Belden acquired SAM, and the company and assets rebranded as Grass Valley

Location of transmit and link antennas at west end of building.

The band 2 antenna array consists of four left hand slant dipoles spaced equally around the top of the mast. This should give an omnidirectional mixed polarisation pattern. The small dish antenna half way up the mast is aligned to central Newbury for the link to the Kennet Radio studio.

The transmitter is at an elevated location above Newbury and Thatcham, but below the higher ground to the north to confine the signal to the Kennet Valley as much as possible. The predicted coverage plot is taken from the Kennet Community Radio licence application form.
