This temporary BBC television transmitter site entered service on 1-May 1953, ahead of the June 1953 coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. It was replaced by the permanent transmitter at Divis on 21-Jul-1955.
The transmitters were installed in a coach which had originally housed one of the pre-war television outside broadcast units. The transmitters were modified RCA type ET4336, HF communication transmitters which the BBC had purchased as surplus equipment after the war. A 72.5m mast supported a single Marconi, batwing type, band I aerial. The programme feed was via a nearby rebroadcast receiving site provided by the GPO, receiving the channel 3 transmissions from Kirk o'Shotts.
The station had a staff of 8 engineers, 2 per shift. Their domestic facilities were provided in a separate wooden hut. |
