Portslade opened in June 1982 with Channel 4 added in May 1983. The structure is a 17m wooden pole which is shortly to be replaced by an 18m steel monopole. All feeds are taken from Brighton's Whitehawk Hill transmitter.

As you can see from the pictures the mast is located at the top of a steep cattle field. It serves about 5,000 people living in Mile Oak which is located to the north west of Brighton.

At the time of Dick's visit, plans were being made for a replacement structure - see the 2010 update for the rest of the story
