PORTSLADE

Photos by Dick Coppard Page last updated: 2023-07-13

2002

Portslade was originally a BBC landlord site which entered service on 25-Jun-1982. Channel 4 was added in May 1983 when the parent site, Brighton's Whitehawk Hill, was equipped. The structure is a 17m wooden pole which is shortly to be replaced by an 18m steel monopole.

As you can see from the pictures the mast is located at the top of a steep cattle field. It serves about 2,700 people living in Mile Oak which is located to the north west of Brighton.

At the time of Dick's visit, plans were being made for a replacement structure - see the 2010 update for the rest of the story
