Comments: Chitterne is a relay of Mendip

Show historic services

February 2009

Chitterne is a small village located in the rolling countryside of Salisbury Plain in south Wiltshire. The area is sparsely populated compared to surrounding districts and is on the extremities of the service areas of Mendip, Rowridge and Hannington.

The last Mendip relay to be added to the gallery, Chitterne is a standard tripole lattice affair with three crossed vertical log periodics pointing nominally north west towards the village. RX is a single log on Mendip. What makes this otherwise rather mundane relay special is that it comes complete with its own aircraft warning light, not normally required for a 17m pole. The proximity of the nearby army artillery ranges and RAF installations is the most likely explanation. These photos were taken just after the snowstorm of February 2009, hence the thick covering of snow and rather gloomy conditions. It looked much brighter at the time!
