Comments: Chartham is a relay of Dover

Updated September 2009 and June 2016

Originally an IBA landlord site, TV channels 1 - 3 entered service on 5th December 1975, with Channel 4 from February 1985. DSO was on 13th and 27th June 2012.

DAB service dates: Digital One, 14th April 2004; Kent, 30th April 2004; BBC, 24th January 2006.

In mid-2016 work to improve the coverage of the Kent multiplex involved changes to the antenna at Chartham - see bottom of page

This hand-written site identification number is stuck to one of the equipment cabins.

The only significant change since Dave's visit is the DAB dipoles on new cantilever at the top. On UHF still two groups of panels for tx and a trough for rx (on the right-hand side in the photos).

Various SHF links have appeared and disappeared but curiously the old-style mobile phone corner reflectors remain.

Dan visited late one evening, late in June 2016, to find the DAB dipoles have been moved and now point in more-or-less the opposite direction. Ofcom data shows the maximum ERP used to be on bearing 290 - an area now better served from Dunkirk. We will have to wait for confirmation of the new parameters. (The two 5-element yagis mounted on the work platform might be a temporary arrangement.)
