Eston Nab was originally established in the mid 1970's to provide troposcatter communications to the Ekofisk oil field. The first communications tower was added in the mid-1980's and has now grown to three major towers plus some smaller ones. The TV relay, designed to relieve ghosting in some parts of Middlesbrough caused by the local steel and chemical works, arrived in September 1988. The next broadcast transmitter to be placed there was EMAP Teesside's DAB in June 2001, and more recently (Jan 2008) Smooth Radio began broadcasting from there on 107.7MHz at 5kW ERP. BBC DAB was added on 7th August 2009. |
