ALTON

Photos by Nick Rice and Rupert Fennymore Page last updated: 2023-10-06

Alton is a 625-line UHF tv relay of Hannington which entered service on 5-Dec-1980 to serve 1,750 people. Channel 4 was added on 4-Jul-1986.

The relay is nested in the middle of a horse field behind houses. It is fenced off from the field but on the day we visited, a large section of the fence was missing and the horses had clearly been in the transmitter compound. The sound of the Watercress Steam Railway line could clearly be heard a short way away.

Until May 2001 Delta was also broadcast from this site on 102.0Mhz using the crossed pair of folded dipoles at the top of the tower, but this service has now moved to nearby Brockham Hill.

DSO was on the 8th and 22nd February 2012.

BBC DAB entered service on Oct 9th 2014

The final photo shows masts on nearby Brockham Hill - an area known locally as Golden Pot - from Alton.
