BERWICK UPON TWEED

Photos by Steve Warner and Frank Vella Page last updated: 2024-09-08

2007

Berwick-upon-Tweed is just 4 miles south of the Scotland/England border and for BBC1/2 it is a relay of Chatton (NE England region) and was formerly, for ITV/Ch4, a relay of Selkirk (Border region).

With DSO in mind it has been decided that all such split-region relays will be rationalised and thus on 13-Dec-2006 Berwick-upon-Tweed was switched to being a full relay of Chatton and now carries ITV programmes from the Tyne Tees region.

Berwick-upon-Tweed was originally an IBA landlord site which entered service on 28-Oct-1977 to serve 8,000 people. Channel 4 was added in February 1984. Radio Borders launched on 22-Jan-1990. BBC national FM entered service on 9-Oct-1991. DSO was on 12 and 26-Sep-2012.

The tower was originally 30m high with the UHF transmit panels mounted just below the top with a mean height of 28m. Clearly the tower has been extended upwards for other users of the site.
