| The Sunley Building in the Piccadilly Plaza, Manchester has in fact now been renamed City Tower, but the site is still listed under its original name.. I am informed that the aerial aystem which looks like a GRP shrouded TV TX is in fact a 2.5 GHz Rx Quad slot array used for Granada TV news microwave links, and that the white case below (which look like a trough receiving aerial!) actually contains filters, pre-amps etc. |

Below: whilst being driven round Manchester in March 2013 Martin managed to snap a couple of images of the City Tower from a distance of - guessing - about half a mile. The Sira and DAB arrays appear to be on quite a substantial tower, but it's not clear whether this has been modified since Colin took his pictures or whether it's simply that the greater distance from which the photos were taken allows us to see more of the support, which would otherwise be hidden by the building itself. Does anyone know for certain? |
| Yes, it seems that "someone" (anonymous) does know for sure. We've received information from a contributor who informs us that the new larger tower was built about five years ago as part of the redevelopment of the building. In turn this allowed for the removal of the two guyed structures at either end of the roof; the antennae which had been housed on these masts were transferred to the new tower. It seems that accommodating all the transmitting aerials on top of the building without causing RF hazards to other users was something of a delicate operation; however the new tower has improved the overall look of the building considerably. |
