MADDYBENNY MORE

Maddybenny More is situated in the north of Northern Ireland, between Coleraine and the seaside towns of Portrush and Portstewart, in an area often referred to as the Causeway Coast. The Giants Causeway itself lies some 15 miles east of Portrush.

It was originally built as a relay station for both 405-line BBC 1 and BBC FM radio. TV transmissions on VHF
ch 5 entered service on 3-Apr-1967, closing on 6-Apr-1982. BBC FM radio entered service on 26-Jun-1967, on 88.7 / 90.9 / 93.1 MHz. The frequencies were changed to 89.6 / 91.8 / 94.0 MHz around 1985 before closing when these frequencies were adopted by Limavady in February 1987.

The site was then not used for broadcasting again until the local ILR Q97.2 opened from the site on 26th January 2000.

The transmission aerials for Q97.2 can be seen near the top of the mast and are two Sira FMC-01 mixed polarisation dipoles (though the horizontal ERP is 6db down on vertical) pointing south west towards Coleraine with just enough going north towards Portrush and Portstewart. Not much point sending out too much power into the Atlantic Ocean!
