Community radio station, Super Station Orkney transmitted from Wideford Hill from September 2004 until its closure in November 2014. Link to the Wikipedia page on the station at the bottom of the page. The hill is about 2 miles to the west of Kirkwall, and has been a GPO/BT SHF link site for many years. There are at least 5 towers up there.

Wideford Hill, as seen from Kirkwall.

Up on the hill, the main BT tower on the left, with Kirkwall below.

The vertical folded dipole at the top of this smaller tower looks to be the likely candidate for the former community radio Tx aerial. Ofcom data quoted a height of 20m, vertically polarised.

This folded dipole looks to be the correct size for band II.

Towers of the other side of the track.

The main BT SHF link tower. The 4 large SHF antennas facing the camera are pointing towards Ward Hill on the Orkney island of South Ronaldsay.

These look to be the stay anchors points for a former mast.

At the time of Martins visit, this temporary facility was providing enhanced connectivity for an event to mark the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Jutland, that was attended by Princess Anne, the Prime Minister and other VIP's, at Lyness, on the island of Hoy. The van, with its telescopic mast, originally belonged to ITN.
