The transmitter is sited at Bryn Moel, just to the north of the picturesque village of Bersham on the western outskirts of Wrexham. The masts are aligned roughly north-north-west/south-south-east.

Wrexham MF opened on 5th March 1946 with the Welsh Home service on 804 kHz. On 15th March 1950, this frequency was changed to 881 kHz, then to 882 kHz on 23rd November 1978. In October 1981 an opt out service of Radio Wales, Radio Clwyd, was created, and the frequency was changed to 657 kHz.
