THE TRANSMISSION GALLERY

Blast 1386 is the LPAM for Reading College. |
The main building (above) houses the transmitter and aerial system, which is however invisible from this side as it's on the far side of the roof. |
The broadcast aerial is roughly V shaped, with a sloping arm (coming from the feed point out of shot but on the left of the picture above) and a horizontal section that runs along the main roof and about two feet above it. |
The feed point and start of the sloping section. |
Unfortunately the photos had to be taken against the sun, the aerial is outlined in the picture below. |
As far as we could see, there was an insulator about half way along the horizontal arm of the aerial. This was further confirmed by the fact that the far anchor point appears to be uninsulated. Difficult to be certain though from that distance. |
The transmitter and processor are amusingly housed in the wash room of the staff ladies' loo on the third floor of the main building, situated on a shelf just out of reach of prying fingers. |
The Inovonics processor seems to be doing a good job, the quality of the station is pretty good and not over compressed. |
Above: the main studio. |
The second studio, mainly used for pre-recordings. |
I'd like to thank Howard Timberlake, Hazel McMillan (station manager) and John Aston (one time R Caroline North DJ!) for their warm welcome and tour. |
