THE TRANSMISSION GALLERY
HAVERFORDWEST
Photos by TCPD | Page last updated: 2019-11-10 |
Horizontally polarised FM antenna in a photograph taken in September 1979. Haverfordwest broadcasts were at 10kW ERP on 89.3, 91.5, and 93.7 MHz. At the same time it was presumably still transmitting television on channel 4H at 10kW ERP, but there is no picture of the antenna in this set. Haverfordwest ceased 405-line TV transmissions in January 1985. |
Looking at the south face of the mast. Just below the band II aerials is an SHF antenna which received the 405-line TV programme feed from Carmel. Lower down on the right are twin 8 element band III Yagis used to receive an RBS of channel 13 from Wenvoe. |
Close up of the original horizontally polarised band II transmit aerial. This is looking at the south face of the mast and 6 tiers of dipoles can be seen facing both southeast and southwest. On the northeast and northwest sides there are only dipoles on the top and bottom tiers. |
When these stations were built the BBC was the only broadcaster in the UK and the concept of buying from overseas was probably not even considered. Hence the equipment required was not available commercially and the BBC designed and constructed a lot of its own equipment. This FM channel combiner was probably built at the BBC Equipment Department. Note the resonators labelled with the programme "Light" and "Home" as well as the frequency MC/S (Megacycles per Second) |
