CHIPPENHAM

Photos by Mark Carver Page last updated: 2021-12-28

2004

The transmitter is situated at an Ambulance station/control centre. Chippenham entered service on 31-Aug-1990. In April 1995 the service was transferred to a new tower.

The programme feed from Wenvoe is received by the two log periodics seen about half way up. However in recent years Radio 1 offered regional opt out evening programmes in Wales, Scotland and NI. In common with some of the other Wenvoe relay stations in the West Country, Radio 1 was provided from an English main station. In Chippenham's case this was Oxford. The two domestic grade yagis for this feed can be seen on the other side of the mast. The last photo shows one with a bent rear reflector! - well it is only used for Radio 1 ;-)

The tx antenna is the end fed vertical dipole at the top of the tower.

ERP is only 10W but the signal remained excellent on my car radio at over 15 miles from the site.

The year was 1990
