TROWELL

Photos by Mike Smith Page last updated: 2023-09-13

1994

This site is rather difficult to photograph as there is no easy angle to get a really good view of both masts. The aerial is arranged to be directional east across Nottingham, on a bearing of 110°.

Trowell was originally built during the 1950's as a deferred facility (DF), transmitter. For DF use the aerial consisted of two 110-ft masts with a T-aerial suspended between them. It was then modified to be directional for use by BBC Radio Nottingham on 1520 kHz from August 1973. Later, ILR Nottingham (Radio Trent) was added, launching on the 3-Jul-1975 on 998 kHz. Radio Nottingham closed on 17-Apr-1992. INR 2 (Virgin Radio) launched on 30-Apr-1993 on 1197 kHz.

Both masts were originally Coubro and Scrutton pole types. The east mast fell down due to heavy
icing, following a winter storm. The replacement is the lattice mast on the left of this picture.
