BREINTON

Earlier Photos

Breinton, the 954kHz Hereford site for Classic Hits; I believe the station is owned by Muff Murfin.

It was a dark day when I took the pics, but when time allows I'll try to get some better ones.

The mast is unusual - it looks like a folded dipole with an MF curtain, but I'm not an expert on this design of antenna - I'm sure someone else knows! (the mast base is grounded [although difficult to see with the undergrowth], and notice the lack of guy insulators).

We are told that this band II antenna was for reserve feed, using a Denon FM tuner. Pointed at Ridge Hill, it took the VHF output in the case of the feed line cutting out. Ordinarily the service was fed from the studios at Cotheridge, Worcester (where the other transmitter once stood) using the BT Musicline service. The reserve would automatically be switched in should the BT line go dead, which apparently quite often happened.
