Photos by Peter Bigwood, Mike Smith and Colin Dalziel (GM8LBC) Page last updated: 2023-09-21

Whitehaven UHF was originally an ITA landlord site which entered service on 30-Jan-1968 with 405-line ITV on VHF Ch7. Closed July 1983.

UHF ITV transmissions commenced on 6-Oct-1972 with BBC 1 & 2 added the following month. Channel 4 was available from the launch on 2-Nov-1982. The population served was 38,000. The UHF cylinder contains a north-east facing cardioid.

Apart from Ferryside, Whitehaven holds the distinction of being the first station to be converted to all-digital operation as part of the national Digital Switchover programme on 14th November 2007.

ILR Carlisle (CFM) launched on 5th September 1995. BBC and Digital One DAB both entered service on 27th September 2007.

Colin Dalziel's earlier photo of the Whitehaven mast shows it devoid of any GSM services and contrasts well with Mike Smith's recent shots...
