LADDER HILL
Photos by Richard Maycock and Richard Moore | Page last updated: 2023-05-09 |
The Ladder Hill TV relay in Western Derbyshire serving this rural area including Whaley Bridge and the town of Chapel-en-le-Frith. This was a 1kW relay of Winter Hill for analogue TV. Originally a BBC landlord site, UHF TV channels 1 - 3 entered service on 16th November 1973. Channel 4 was added in June 1985. The UHF cylinder contains a NNE facing cardioid. DSO was on 4th November and 2nd December 2009. |
I took the pictures last September and you will see two masts in picture 1; the recent BT Airwave installation seems to have been too much to add to the main structure, which is well used, so has had to be placed alongside. It had its own generator running constantly, pumping out foul diesel fumes. (I assume that this was a fairly temporary measure until electricity could be cabled in, and that by now it is running without the generator). |
The site is in a fine location - the trig. point you see in the second photo is at 405m AOD. There are good views to the NW towards Manchester and I would imagine the site provides a very good signal in that direction for all its services. |
