Llandecwyn is situated towards the northern end of a mountain range called the Rhinogs. It provides UHF TV coverage to Porthmadog, Penrhyndeudraeth and the lower part of the Vale of Ffestiniog, where mountains screen the signal from the main TV site in the area, Arfon.

Originally a BBC landlord site, Llandecwyn entered service on 30-Jul-1976, with S4C available from the November 1982 launch. BBC national FM radio was added during August 1995.
