GREAT ORMES HEAD
Photos by Mike Smith, Richard Moore and Ray Cooper | Page last updated: 2018-05-24 |
Great Ormes Head is situated on the North Wales Coast just above Llandudno. There are two masts at this site where, unusually, the landlord is British Gas. ILR station Coast FM (96.3 MHz), is broadcast from this mast and Classic FM appears to be broadcast from aerials mounted on an adjacent building. Classic FM's service area covers most of the North Wales coast, and Anglesey, as well as penetrating a surprising distance inland amongst Snowdonia. The Band II mixed polarisation radiator for Coast FM can be just seen half way up on the right, just under the lower SHF dish. ILR 96.3 MHz (Marcher Coast FM), launched on the 27th August 1993. Classic FM was added in December 1995. ILR 105.7 MHz (Real Radio Mid & North Wales), launched on the 4th January 2011. This site's connection with broadcasting goes back to the mid 1960's where it was used by the BBC as a link site for distribution of TV. The band I, 405-line TV transmissions from Llanddona were received here and on-passed via a 7GHz SHF link to Moel-y-Parc. It was also initially used to provide the BBC 2 programme feed to Llanddona, with the UHF transmissions from from Winter Hill received here and on-passed via a 7 GHz SHF link to Llanddona. By the mid 1970's, Great Ormes Head was a BBC SHF link station for 625-line BBC 1 & 2 Wales distribution from Cardiff via Blaenplwyf, Bwlch Mawr, Llanddona, Great Ormes Head to Moel-y-Parc. |
Finally this shot taken from out at sea, during the same trip as Ray's photo off Llanddona! |
