TROWELL

Trowell is the Medium Wave site built by the BBC for Radio Nottingham. It is on the west side of the city about 4 miles out from the centre on a relatively high piece of land. Radio Trent, the Nottingham ILR station was added in 1975. I understand from the Radio Trent engineer the site was engineered to propagate most of the signal towards Nottingham. The site is now used for Absolute Radio and Gold. I have known this site for a number of years and noted that through a road widening scheme of Coventry Lane, the site lost some land at the front. Notably, the electric transformer is now out the compound and I am sure it used to be inside.

It is a real shame those trees are in the way. Basically this is the layout of the site. The mast on the left (east), is closest to Nottingham

End furthest away from Nottingham (actually closer to Derby). When the ILR franchise was altered to provide a joint Nottingham and Derby dual area franchise the medium wave 999 frequency aerial was re-engineered to bias Nottingham and have a small overlap to Derby where a separate transmitter at Quardon was provided on 945kHz for Derby. Also of note the mast structure is different at this end.

A relatively clear photo of the furthest away from Nottingham mast.

Site Power transformer. This is now on public land, but I am sure this used to be within the compound. A road widening scheme in the 1990s may have altered the boundary line.

Although very grubby, this is a piece of history. This is the electricity board's identification plate on their transformer pole. The BBC ceased transmitting from this site in 1992 as the medium wave transmitter was required for Virgin radio.

Finally I did manage to get a decent photo of the Nottingham end mast. This is from a neighbouring field. Notice in the shot a further power feed to the site. Rare that the electricity board gives a dual feed to a customer. Also the IBA provided a standby generator for Radio Trent when they first started broadcasting.
