CHURCHDOWN HILL

Photos by Jack Richardson Page last updated: 2024-11-10

February 2020

After going up the wrong road (thanks, Google!) to what I thought was the top of Churchdown Hill (or Chosen Hill, as it's also known), and having a nice chat with the owner of said road, I eventually found the right road, and proceeded to the tower.

I wonder what the dipole at the top is for? Looks like it could be for FM, but Ofcom data confirms only the X-type aerials are used. Below are two band III DAB dipoles (25m), which transmit Digital One only.

The upper tier of band II panels transmit ILR and R.Gloucestershire and has panels on all four sides of the tower. Band III DAB dipoles are also interleaved with these panels. They transmit all the other DAB multiplexes.

The BBC National FM aerials are the lower tier of band II panels and are only on two sides of the tower facing roughly east-northeast and west-southwest. They are offset slightly from the local radio panels, as can be seen better below...

Former Channel 5 panels.

The FM RX aerials point towards Sutton Coldfield.

The log looks towards Ridge Hill. I'm guessing this would have been the Channel 5 feed (or reserve)?

St. Bartholomew's Church - the church on Churchdown Hill!

The view from the back of the church... Bredon Hill is on the left, Cheltenham on the right.
