THE TRANSMISSION GALLERY

HORNDEAN

Photos by Andrew Murphy Page last updated: 2023-03-15

March 2023

I had the pleasure of visiting the Horndean relay transmitter mast today (12/03/2023) on the way for a walk in the woods nearby at the Queen Elizabeth Country Park (QECP) before the rain set-in.

I have compared the photos that were taken back originally in 2002 and that I can conclude that the site has not changed much since then (despite DSO and 700MHz clearance) and that the surrounding area is in the South Downs National Park now which I think is a bonus.

On the way to QECP (only accessible on the A3), I noticed that the demand from services from the relay are still very much needed, though, there was a mixture of aerials on dwellings that point towards Rowridge (Horndean's parent) and Midhurst.

Apologies for the "overcastness" of these photos! :)

The approach to the site which is located at the end of Glamorgan Road.

The Tx Log Periodic aerials on the mast pointing towards Horndean village.

Looks like the incoming feed to Horndean has been upgraded to twin log periodics in a 'phased-array' arrangement.

[Ed] Of interest is that these receive aerial have remained horizontally polarised, unlike many other Rowridge relays where they were changed to vertical at digital switchover.

An overview of the site.

Telemetry satellite dish.

Appears to be the transmitter cabin where the RF apparatus is housed.

Site name plate.
