BILSDALE MK1

Bilsdale fire 1975

Bilsdale ITV was a parallel pair of Pye 25kw transmitters. In 1975 the A transmitter caught fire owing to a fault in its HT transformer. Both transmitters went off the air, the B transmitter having clogged air filters. Service was maintained for many months at half power on only the B transmitter, initially with no reserve capability. This fault had ramifications for all other IBA 25kw transmitters.

After an extensive cleanup, the photo shows a vacant space at the far end of the transmitter hall.

As a temporary measure until Pye made a replacement 25kw, an 11kw Marconi transmitter destined for Brougher Mountain was installed in the storeroom.

This photo shows the Marconi switching frame adjacent to the lighter grey Pye frame. The Marconi frame contained a motorised coaxial changeover switch to which both 25kw and 11kw were connected. The Marconi frame also contained the 11kw sound/vision combining unit fed by the two vertical 3 1/8 inch feeders. The larger of the copper-coloured cans was one of a pair of sound resonators, whilst the smaller one was an image subcarrier resonator (fv-4.43mhz).
The horizontal insulated pipe was the steam pipe from the 25kw to its heat exchanger through to the right.

A hole was cut into the outside wall and fitted with a temporary wooden vent for inlet and outlet, against which the Marconi cooler unit butted inside.
