THE TRANSMISSION GALLERY
SUTTON COMMON
Photos by Ringway Manchester | Page last updated: 2024-08-07 |
This tower was built from reinforced concrete and formed part of the 1950s backbone microwave network that was designed to keep vital communications links in place in the event of a nuclear attack. |
This location offers a line of sight across the Cheshire plain, meaning the signal can be heard into Lancashire, Shropshire, Staffordshire, Derbyshire, Greater Manchester and Merseyside. |
Silk FM’s transmitter is 150w which is quite a lot when the antenna sits almost 70m up the tower and the whole site is 401m above sea level. |
This is the transmit antenna, a pair of phased slanted dipoles. |
The view back towards Macclesfield. |
