Silk 106.9 FM Transmit Aerial (2024)

This tower was built from reinforced concrete and formed part of the 1950s backbone microwave network that was designed to keep vital communications links in place in the event of a nuclear attack.

This location offers a line of sight across the Cheshire plain, meaning the signal can be heard into Lancashire, Shropshire, Staffordshire, Derbyshire, Greater Manchester and Merseyside.

Silk FM’s transmitter is 150w which is quite a lot when the antenna sits almost 70m up the tower and the whole site is 401m above sea level.

This is the transmit antenna, a pair of phased slanted dipoles.

The view back towards Macclesfield.
