The 1961 European plan for UHF TV broadcasting (ST61), allocated a main station for East Lothian, transmitting on channels 21, 24, 27 & 31, with a maximum ERP of 250 kW from a location about 16 miles east of the centre of Edinburgh, near to Haddington. By the time that TV transmissions commenced with BBC 2 on 27-Oct-1969, that plan had been changed to a 100 kW transmitter closer to Edinburgh on the north side of the Firth of Forth at Craigkelly, near Burntisland.
Colin Dalziel writes: "Free-standing towers are the exception rather than the rule above 50m height. This one had a previous existence as the first structure built at Emley Moor during 1956. It was reconstructed at Craigkelly in the late 1960’s for the opening of the UHF TV service in East Central Scotland."
