Betws-y-Coed (pronounced Bet-us-er-Coy-d) covers the village of the same name, as well as the town of Llanrwst, and the southern end of the Conwy valley generally. The relay receives its UHF signal via two trough antennas from Conwy. This relay also provides VHF/FM coverage of the BBC Nationals. Originally built by the BBC, 405-line BBC 1 on VHF channel 4 and BBC FM radio entered service, on the 25th November 1968. 405-line BBC 1 closed in January 1985. UHF TV commenced with BBC 2 in July 1972, with BBC 1 from April 1973, and ITV from 19th October 1973. S4C was available from the launch on 1st November 1982. The UHF cylinder contains a west-northwest facing cardioid. DSO was on 21st October and 18th November 2009. BBC FM radio was re-engineered for mixed polarisation and Radio's 1 & 4 added, January 1994. The tower was replaced in October 1999. |
There is a splendid view over the Snowdonia mountain range to the west, although the sun angle was not ideal for photos as Mike visited in the evening. |
