BRUERNISH

Photos by James Muir and Adrian Beale Page last updated: 2024-08-30

James Muir writes:

I've just returned from a fabulous Easter hill-walking weekend on the remote and stunningly beautiful Isle of Barra in the Western Isles. In the process I managed to capture images of all three UHF tv relay stations on the island.

Bruernish on the East Side of the island is fed from Kilbride (South Uist) and then as described for Borve. Incidentally, the BBC pictures (with NICAM stereo sound) received at the end of this incredible relay chain, as seen in our nearby B&B, were excellent, however ITV and C4 were mediocre at best.

The first photo shows the station at sunset on Friday evening, 6-Apr-2007. The others were taken early morning Saturday, 7-Apr-2007

The rest of the photos were taken by Adrian Beale, who comments:

Taken in July 2010

There is now a upgraded receive antenna for digital reception from Daliburgh

There is a VSAT dish for telemetry on the mast and a receive satellite dish for the BBC PSB1 and PSB2.

The site has also been fenced to protect the dish.
