| Isles of Scilly entered service on 14th July 1969 with 405 line BBC 1, on VHF channel 3, and BBC National FM radio. 405 line BBC 1 closed on 5th January 1982. UHF TV commenced with 3 channels on 3rd May 1974. Channel 4 was added in December 1984. The UHF cylinder contains a west facing cardioid. DSO was on 8th July and 5th August 2009. Our first photo was taken prior to 1983 and shows the Band I and Band II antennas which were subsequently replaced by the Marconi Slant Polarised FM antennas. |

| The close-up photo clearly shows the FM and UHF 'trough' aerials which receive the off-air feeds for RBR from Redruth on the mainland. Since these were taken something interesting and unusual has happened here... it is now, effectively, "two towers in one". A few years ago a second cantilever-arm type structure was built inside the existing tower. I think this was done to take some of the loading of the telecom aerials off the main structure. The Telegraph structure is taller than the average run-of-the-mill type, and has to put up with some pretty severe weather. |
