MYNYDD BACH
Photos by David Neale, Hywel Clatworthy & Martin Brown | Page last updated: 2023-02-10 |
Originally an IBA landlord site, ITV entered service on 14-Sep-1973 with BBC 1 & 2 added in January 1974. Mynydd Bach was the first existing relay station to have a transposer installed for the future, fourth programme (S4C) in May 1980. Consequently S4C was transmitted from the 1-Nov-1982 launch. The UHF cylinder contains a north-west facing cardioid. DSO was on 3rd and 31st March 2010. Hywel has provided an update to David's earlier photos - no real change to the relay itself - together with a few views from the site. Looked pretty in as the sun went down last night |
At least one further equipment cabin has been added, but on the broadcast side still a cylinder and the two troughs - characteristic of an early UHF relay. |
Hywel notes that the hoops have been removed from the ladder. Otherwise it's mostly mobile phone antennas and their associated SHF links which have changed. |
Hywel added this picture in July 2016 of Mynydd Bach on a summer evening, with nearby Wind turbine |
Looking towards Mynydd Y Lan (possibly once a "Home Office" site - not used for broadcasting). [Ed] Since February 2016 this site is now a DAB Tx site for the South East Wales multiplex and called Pontyllanfriath. |

This final picture was taken by Martin Brown in May 2017 from about 1.5 miles away near to the Pontyllanfriath site. |
