This site is tucked away along a little lane, a fair distance from the main road. It looks as if it may not have been tended to in a while and signs which have fallen down and not been re-erected. Talking of signs, Gloucester MF must hold the record for the site with the most signs - I counted at least ten!
Gloucester MF was built by the BBC in 1956. A "Deferred Facility" transmission site, for use in case of a civil emergency during the cold war period. This site was pressed into use for the launch of Radio Gloucestershire on 3-Oct-1988 on 603 kHz, but then closed in 1992 as part of a plan to provide frequencies for more commercial local radio. BBC Radio Gloucestershire's MF services are now broadcast from sites at Berkeley Heath and Bourton-on-the-Water. This site was then re-equipped with an Eddystone B6038, 1 kW transmitter working on a frequency of 1197 kHz for the launch of INR 2 (Virgin Radio) on 30-Apr-1993 until 20-Jan-2023. |
