September 2016

Just up the road from the Beacon Centre (West Road) is Westgate College, the transmitter site and studios of NE1FM. The station had previously been located elsewhere but seems to have "settled" at the College since January 2015. Ofcom refers to the site simply as "Newcastle upon Tyne".

The station originally launched in June 2007 and along the line seems to have operated from three different studios and at least one other transmitter site. The station was off-air from April to August 2012 due to loss of the then transmitter site - this attracted the attention of Ofcom which had just granted a five-year licence extension.

There are three buildings at Westgate College, one old, the other two relatively new. The transmit antenna appears to be located on the "clock tower" of the original (1950s?) building. The image below is from Google Street View in June 2015 - the antenna is almost directly above the clock.

Fenham is just under 200 m to the west - the college is actually the Fenham site's next door neighbour!
