First photos of this digital self-help. October 2024

Like its sister at Maragowan-A, Maragowan-B is listed by Ofcom as a digital self-help. The site is a Caravan & Motorhome Club campsite just above the western end of Loch Tay. The site previously had an analogue self-help relay before DSO. Whether the campsite needs a relay is questionable, as it has direct line-of-sight to the parent Tx at Killin.

Wandering about with a modest 7dBi log-periodic on a short pole, I measured signal strengths of 36-55dBuV from Killin (this is more than enough for most TV sets.)

The campsite was closed at the time of the visit and, understandably, there was no output from the relay. Whether, like Maragowan-A, the relay is permanently switched off or whether the digital equipment was never actually installed after DSO in 2010, I can't say.

According to Ofcom data, the relay transmits on Channels 39, 42, 45, which are the same as at its sister site down the road at Maragowan-A. These are all adjacent to the incoming channels of 40, 43, 46 from Killin and are also VP, as is Killin. The licensed EIRP is 0.25W. One wonders if having adjacent channels and the same polarisation was a good idea anyway.

The Tx aerials are a pair of domestic Yagis mounted at one end of the campsite reception hut. You'll need to look closely to spot two aerials because of the foliage!

Managed to find a gap in the foliage to get a better view of the two Tx Yagis. The campsite is split between two distinct areas, so I guess the power is divided equally between the two.

The Rx aerial, also in foliage, points to Killin.

Closer view of the Rx aerial: a tri-boom VP Yagi (possibly Televes or similar)
