THE TRANSMISSION GALLERY

NESS OF LEWIS

Photos by James Yardley Page last updated: 2020-12-01

James provided the first selection of pictures of this remote site to the gallery which he took using a Pentax 35mm film camera and scanned the image. Unfortunately it was not the brightest of days!

Also in this extreme north-western corner of the British Isles was the site of the Decca Navigator station at Eoropaidh. The masts are no more but the keepers' cottages are now available for self-catering lets.

The broadcast aerials are on the BT 50m mast. TV channels 1 - 3 entered service on 16-Sep-1982 with Channel 4 from August 1984. BBC FM radio was added on 13-Oct-1992.

At the bottom of this picture, on the left, is the UHF TV transmit aerial. Consisting of a 4 tier open cardioid. Above, also on the left is a single Marconi, band II dipole transmitting FM radio.
