Originally built for both BBC 405-line Television and BBC FM radio. They entered service on 13th July 1964. BBC 1 closed in July 1984. In 1987, FM radio was re-engineered for mixed polarisation. Radio 1 was added on 4th October 1990, Radio 4 on 4th March 1991 and Radio nan Gaidheal on 15th May 2002.

The transmitter is located a few miles south-east of Forfar town centre, and five miles east of Angus.

As indicated by the site-plate, Forfar is also a NGW Maintenance Base (see last photo). The on-site engineers are responsible for maintaining the transmitters at surrounding sites including Angus, Durris & Craigkelly
