Dan: "The broadcast antenna is just visible from ground level, but for a small fee can be viewed at close quarters. My visit was in late December 2009 and it snowed while we were at the top of the tower. The library tower at Cambridge University, now home to Cam FM, was designed by the same architect, Sir Giles Gilbert Scott. I'm not aware of any other of his works being used as broadcast sites, though prominent towers are a feature of many!" Alan: "The best way to see the antennas is to go up the Tower Experience tour, which allows you to go onto the roof of the cathedral. Since Dan's photos in 2009, another Shively Labs antenna has been added, probably when Juice FM had a power increase in 2010. Rain was approaching, so I had to take these photos pretty quick!" |
The broadcast antenna is just to the right of centre. |
At roof level it becomes apparent that this is a popular, if somewhat "covert" site. |
This is the one: a Shively Labs mixed polarisation antenna. |
I think it works by confusing the RF... It's reasonably compact and unobtrusive compared to other options. |
The view towards Liverpool waterfront. |
St. John's Beacon. |
On the way back down, an unusual view of the bells. |
Alan reports the same lack of visibility from ground level...the 107.6 stack is just right of centre... |
...hard to see from the ground... |
...but at close quarters there are now two antennas! |
