Show historic services

Morley was built by the IBA for the Leeds ILR service which launched on 1st September 1981 as Radio Aire on 828 kHz and 94.6 MHz. The FM frequency was changed to 96.3 MHz on 16th September 1986. It is situated in a paddock behind a council works depot just off Junction 28 of the M62 at Morley.

Originally with an FM ERP of a lowly 600W, in some parts of Leeds, Viking FM from High Hunsley on 96.9 MHz, some 60 miles away, provided a stronger signal! The ERP at Morley was increased to 950W during 1996 and in January 2006, the FM transmitter was relocated to the adjacent tower which is known as Tingley.

DAB service dates: Leeds, 14th November 2001; Digital One, 8th November 2006.

The mast is the radiator for the Medium Wave service with a sloping wire reflector. Ofcom data indicates a 4dB power reduction around 300°. The direction of Bradford which has its own ILR service.

At the top is the band II FM radio aerials. Two tiers of C & S Antennas loop and dipole. These aerials radiated omni directional, circular polarisation. Just below we can see the top of the wires comprising the MF sloping wire reflector. At the bottom of this picture are the band III DAB aerials comprising two five element Yagis. Ofcom data indicates that they are pointing due north.

As it happens Real Radio also have their studios very nearby, though they
do not transmit from here. Their transmissions are from Emley Moor.

There is line-of-sight to Emley from here so with these Rx aerials
they should have no problem monitoring their signals off-air!
