This little thing was one of three very low power sites for fill-in services of the Yorkshire Dales ILR station Fresh Radio. Broadcasting with just 7 watts, it put in a surprisingly good daytime performance in the local area covering Ilkley, Otley and other parts of Lower Wharfedale, just to the north of Leeds. Ben Rhydding was situated in the grounds of the local scouts' hut and very close to the Leeds to Ilkley railway line
To clarify the history, Ben Rhydding operated on 1431 kHz from January 2001 using a lightweight mast radiator (Ofcom data shows the antenna as 15 m tall). From February 2007 the site operated on 107.1 MHz and the Ofcom data suggests this was likely to be a vertical antenna at the top of the mast. The frequency was subsequently allocated to Stray FM at Windsover Farm |
