THE TRANSMISSION GALLERY

A now defunct broadcast site, Bill Wright photographed the site around 2010. He takes up the story.. We were bowling along the A64, heading for the brewery at Cropton with an empty van, and as we left Tadcaster I mused about York TV, and the whereabouts of the transmitter. York TV was one of these new stations that covered a relatively small area, perhaps just one city. Now it stood to reason that it needed to be on the Emley Moor side of York, because that's the direction all the aerials are pointing, although York gets as good or better reception from Bilsdale, no-one wants to watch Tyne Tees in Yorkshire! |
My chain of thought was interrupted as I came round the corner just before the turn-off for the northern bypass. There on my left was pretty huge water tower, and on top of it was a new looking galvanised steel tower with some interesting gear at the top. With lightning reactions I turned off onto a lane and very soon I was parked next to the tower. I turned my telly on (I was in the motor home) and found good reception of ch54 with the aerial in its un-erected position. Two York TV vehicles in the yard below the tower were the clincher, so I took a few pictures. |
It looks as if the transmissions were aimed to the north as well as towards the city. I wonder why? |
It's interesting to see that one of the local aerial installers advertised on York TV's teletext - I would have thought that anyone who could see York's teletext would be unlikely to need an aerial rigger! The view across the city from this site is splendid. Incidentally I was able to receive York TV at Barmby Moor, about 13 miles from the transmitter. In Spring 2017 a new digital service for York was established, from the nearby Bilborough site. |
