May 2015

BBC DAB added a new site near Stamford on 16 December 2014. The NGR given corresponds to "East Casterton", as previously used by Rutland FM, yet the BBC refer to the site as "Stamford Old Quarry"...further confusion arises since Rutland FM has changed the NGR for its site to reflect the move to a new structure!

Both locations are within 400m of each other. Stamford Old Quarry? East Casterton? Two sites? One site? Rob went to have a look and on finding an empty compound at the old (East Casterton) site saw a tower across the fields...

Looks promising, let's get a bit closer. The land it sits within looks to have been farmland but now appears to be waste ground just used by dog walkers. I suspect it's earmarked for more housing

This looks good. Rutland FM at the top, and BBC DAB on the right. East Casterton and Stamford Old Quarry are indeed one and the same!

Rob says the gate sign here reads "Stamford Old Quarry" - so it's the BBC who have the wrong NGR and Rutland FM has the wrong name. Ofcom's data is consistent with Rutland FM's view of life but doesn't yet list BBC DAB from here!

BBC DAB downlink dish visible in the compound - two skips were still present there too, presumably from the installation

The broadcast antenna array. At the top we have the Rutland FM Tx, further down on the left we have the DAB transmit and further down still what looks like FM receive, aimed on the main Rutland FM site at Manton

BBC DAB log. Antennas of this type haven't been common place so far in the rollout, perhaps we'll see more as smaller sites crop up? The bracket has "001 Stamford" and "002 Stamford" written on it

Rutland FM tx antenna is the same type as at Manton

I believe this is the FM Receive for the Rutland FM service, on their main site at Manton

Skips, probably still there from the BBC installation, along with the green BBC DAB hut and the back of the downlink dish

And finally...despite the site's identity crisis someone has labelled it as Stamford Old Quarry

East Casterton
