May 2017 and site history

The Aberdeen ILR station Northsound went on-air on 27 July 1981 using the BT Granite Hill site with an ERP of 0.6 kW. The service transferred to Durris on 17 December 1993, with the relay at Stirling Hill operational from the same date. A further low-powered relay at Balgownie opened in January 1995 to serve the north of Aberdeen.

The site was initially established by the Post Office during 1955 to provide a BBC TV feed to Meldrum. Facilities for Grampian Television were added by 1961, including a link to the Durris transmitter.

The detail of the ILR installation is unconfirmed however the available data indicates mixed polarisation was used with the antenna at 190 m AOD. The total height of the tower is now 65 m and the site is just above the 125 m contour. It seems the lattice extension probably carried the ILR antenna.

Community Radio station shmuFM transmits from Stewart Park Court - a tower block about 700 m to the east.

This massive structure is prominent on the Abderdeen skyline - Granite Hill is said to be the highest point in the built-up area.

The current tower was built in the around 1967 to facilitate expansion in the Post Office network - it still appears to provide SHF links to the north.

The small extension is assumed to have supported the ILR antenna. A similar arrangement can be seen at Wenallt where a two-tier Lindenblad array is (was) mounted on a similar lattice at the top of another BT tower.
