Beyond Radio is the local radio station for Lancaster and Morecambe in North Lancashire. The Ashton Memorial which sits above Lancaster is the location for the Beyond Radio band 2 transmission. |
Ashton Memorial is a folly built 1907-1909 located at the top of Williamson Park, a kilometre east of Lancaster City centre. |
A band 2 folded dipole is located within the the top section of the memorial; this view is from the east side. The dipole can just be seen behind the window. |
The dipole can clearly be seen in this close up view, also from the east side. The location of the antenna within the confines of the top section of the memorial is probably not ideal as it is close to building structure within its nearfield. However this is more than mitigated by the antena siting being in the highest point in the area; clear line of sight across Lancaster and over to Morecambe which is some 7km to the north west. |
The dipole is also clearly visible in this close up view from the south side of the memorial. |
What is believed to be the programme link from the Beyond Radio studio location is seen on the south west side of the memorial about half way up the building. The antenna is orientated toward the location of the Beyond Radio address in Lancaster so is assumed (but not proven) to be the studio link. |
Close up view of believed studio link antenna. |
As this is an almost 'covert' installation, an on site spectrum measurement is a useful check to verify the transmission. The measurement shows what we expect: the transmission is active, on the correct frequency and at a level that would be expected in close proximity. |
View from the memorial observation deck across central Lancaster and over to Morecambe. The high ground of the South Lake District is on the horizon. |
From the observation deck on the memorial the Lancaster TV TX is seen 5km due north. |
