Ramsbottom is a relay of Winter Hill via Haslingden. It has line of sight to Winter Hill (see below), but couldn't use it as a source because, prior to DSO, it transmitted on adjacent channels.

Originally an IBA landlord site, Ramsbottom entered service on 28-Oct-1977, with Channel 4 from 26-Jul-1985. The original UHF channel allocation was 48/66/56/68. BBC 1 was changed to ch58 during 1996 as ch48 was about to be used by Channel 5 at Winter Hill. There was yet another change during 1998 as Winter Hill interim DTT was allocated ch's 66, 56 & 68, amongst others. Consequently the UHF channel allocations at Ramsbottom then became a standard UHF group of 58/64/61/54, but with BBC 2 transmitted with an ERP of 320W. Four times the ERP of the other three channels. Not sure why. Anyone?

Two UHF log periodics to receive Haslingden.

On the right, these are probably GPS receive antennas, and are likely to have been used to provide a timing reference for precision offset equipment used with the analogue transmitters, following the 1998 UHF channel changes. Precision offset reduced the impact of co-channel interference on analogue TV. Cornholme is only 9½ miles away and used the same UHF channels.

A view of the service area and also, in the background the Peel Monument on the right of the photo. On the left, in the far distance is Rivington Moor with Winter Hill highlighted (resizing the photo rendered it otherwise invisible!)
