TAY BRIDGE

Photos by David Foord Robert Gordon, Mark Walker and Justin Smith, Aerials and TV Page last updated: 2023-08-31

Tay Bridge is located on the south side of the Tay Estuary. It's a medium power relay of Angus which also transmitted Channel 5 to the Dundee area.

Originally an IBA landlord site, Tay Bridge entered service with 3 UHF TV channels on the 28-Nov-1974 to serve 33,000 people. Channel 4 was added in September 1983 with Channel 5 available from the 30-Mar-1997 launch. Tay bridge also transmitted local TV named Channel 6 on ch49 from 31-May-2001 until July 2002. DSO was on the 4th and 18th August 2010.

ILR Dundee (Radio Tay) launched on 17-Oct-1980 on 95.8 MHz. The frequency was then changed to 102.8 MHz on 27-May-1987 as part of the European reallocation project. On 10-Feb-1994 transmissions were moved to Angus and the power increased from 1.3 kW to 4.0 kW. However, when Ofcom relaxed their rules allowing stations to re-use one of their existing frequencies within the service area, a low power relay was opened at Tay Bridge on the same frequency as Perth, 96.4 MHz at 50 W.

The wrap around panels just below the top at 40m, were for Channel 5, with an omni-directional radiation pattern. The main UHF cylinder has a broad directional pattern to the north (350 deg), only.

On the evening of 15-Jun-2006 the Tay Bridge relay was put off the air by a feeder cable fire.

Following the fire two temporary towers were put up at the site...
